The UNITE Caribbean (UC) Pilot Plastic Recycling project  was launched on 25th July 2019. The two-year project is being funded by the government of the republic of France in collaboration with the GOSL and other private and civil society agencies and is aimed at setting up an OECS-wide plastic waste collection and recycling system with a pilot phase between Saint Lucia and Martinique. Some of the objectives of the project include:

  • Setting-up a system for the collection and management of plastic waste, involving public, private and local stakeholders in Saint Lucia;
  • Supporting local recyclers to export used plastic bottles from Saint Lucia (eventually the Caribbean) for recycling, in particular to the SIDREP plant in Martinique;
  • Raising the awareness of the Saint Lucia population on the ecological issues surrounding managing and selectively sorting recyclable waste; and
  • Extract key lessons from the Saint Lucia pilot project to provide relevant and applicable lessons and case studies for replication in the rest of Saint Lucia and the OECS.

The Chair of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, Mr. Bishnu Tulsie, represented the organisation at the launch on a panel discussion on the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and single-use plastic waste management. UNITE Caribbean is looking forward to the support of Saint Lucia’s civil society to implement this project. The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations encourages everyone to learn more about the harmful effects of plastic on human health and our environment, and to take action and support national efforts to manage Saint Lucia’s plastic consumption.
